Lava isn't created just because he landed on the ground, it's because he used LavaFlow when he landed.

How about instead of Ghast fireballs, maybe 3 of those dragon healing idols from the end. Scaled down slightly if possible and maybe a little more fiery? Just a thought. And in the show, and rock that was hit by lavabending did begin to melt, although that might be a functionality to bring up separately as an addition to lavabending as a whole.
