as much as i may agree that the point of language is to convey meaning, and as long as the recipient understands what you mean then it doesn't matter. However in the case of 'cannon' vs 'canon', for someone who might not know what canon is, they may read 'This move is not cannon' and be very confused.
That actually happened to me .-. Then @Ninjakid1324 started posting cannon pictures, and I got even more confused xD

1. You really are oblivious, aren't you.
2. Go ahead and check your own spelling when arguing that EVERYONE should check their spelling and grammer EVERY time for EVERY thread, document, etc. You are a hypocrite. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hypocrite
3. I am trying to argue this so that grammer nazis won't have free reign over threads, and find a great suggestion and troll it with, OMG IT IS CANON NOT CANNON GUYS!!!! GET IT RIGHT!!! Over and over again. The difference between canon and cannon can be easily decided by context, and, since this is the internet, nobody except grammer nazi's like yourself about a single letter used in context like that.
Would you stop using the word Nazi?
It means National Socialist, and it's offensive to call somebody you don't like a Nazi. And like Jedk said not everybody knows what canon means.

Would you stop being oblivious to phases? This Is A Grammer Nazi, And This is You.
The only difference is that you won't kill yourself after you make a typo.
A simple explanation to language in copy paste format from youtube comments from that video.
"I am an English teacher and 'grammar Nazis' (to those who don't realise a sarcastic pejorative for those who obsess over grammar) irk me off.

The most fundamental aspect of linguistics is efficient communication and understanding of context

The fact of the matter is that the bulk of the time we do not communicate verbally the way we would write formally in an exam.
Deer Hateur- What a pathetic little life you must lead. My keyboard is causing problems right now which means occasionally it leaves out letters and so on.

If I am preparing my students for an exam of course I would focus much more on grammar.

Secondly, if YOU were a decent teacher you would realise the most important thing is developing student's confidence and understanding. I am not saying grammar isn't important; of course it is, but I am arguing that context and general understanding is more important in daily communication. Grammar needs to be understood- it does NOT need to be textbook for daily communication.

I taught in China in various contexts- in classrooms, in tutorials and at a summer camp. I taught literally thousands of students and they hold me in high regard. And students I have helped here had a noticeable improvement in their grades and were grateful to me for it.

Do you comprehend every word I am saying? YES YOU DO. So unless this is an exam context, I suggest you get out of your stuck up attitude and get into the real world. And in the real world people do not communicate as they would in an exam.

Self-righteous prig!

WolfEdge07- you are welcome to communicate whatever way you like. But go into any pub or even coffee shop and see if average people communicate with an obsessive focus on perfect grammar. They don't. I will of course teach formal grammar to my students in preparation for an exam but I won't mislead them about the real world.

WolfEdge07-

(Conversation Scenario)

Friend 1- 'Do you want to go to the cinema theater tonight to see the new film starring Brad Pitt?'

or.....

Friend 1- 'Do you wanna see that new Brad Pitt movie later?'

which do you honestly think is the more realistic, everyday question?

'wanna' would not be considered good grammar, but it is far more likely to be used in casual speech

These forums are still forums. There are bound to be typos in the forums or "bad" grammer, simply because people speak casually on here.
And yes, I am copy pasting from the comments in that video. And yes, I am skipping past the questions. And yes, I am not editing out any curse words because there aren't any Real cussing words in there. But does that make it any less valid? No it doesn't.

What is your deal? I'm making a point and trying to educate. I wasn't being provocative, I didn't call people out, I just wanted people to know that "cannon" isn't the word they mean to use. I'm not fighting contractions or slang, but I'm pointing out the correct word. Last, do you actually know what Nazi means? It's an abbreviation for Nationalsozialistische
Which is German for "National Socialist German Worker's Party" what part about my wish to share information about a word relates to Germany or Socialism?

Also, in making this post I stopped feeling compelled to say all of this every time I saw the word "cannon" not "canon".

This whole post started out as a Grammar Nazi rant, and you are still ranting about grammar. Apparently you want to make everyone also change the Phase Grammar Nazi to Grammar, because There is DEFINITELY no reference in ANYTHING, to this phase, and it was once used as a abbreviation for a (widely considered evil) historic political group. You are the biggest Grammar Nazi I have ever met. I mostly joke when correcting other people's grammar, other times I simply say, I simply can't understand what you are saying, and most likely other people couldn't either, could you rephrase that? a small portion of time. If you were to actually let people talk casually on these forums, maybe this would slide. But the true reason is that you simply don't understand that language doesn't need to be in essay form on everything you type/write.

Guys.

You're arguing about the spelling of a word.

We have reached YouTube comment levels of forum discussion.
Could you lock the thread so we don't have to see them argue over something so petty? It would be appreciated by probably more people than just me. I don't like seeing the community turn to this. I doubt anyone does

No rules have technically been broken and it is kinda petty to lock it just because I don't think they should talk about it. I mean, that's not far from censorship.

Yo @owlcool, it gets pretty annoying when you try to pick arguments with people over tiny things, can you try being a bit more civil?
Define 'civil'? I personally think cannon and canon make no difference when used in the correct context. As long as you can understand it. Also, in respond to @Pickle9775, someone misinterpreting the spelling of the word should not at all discredit what they have written. Not everyone can have perfect grammar or perfect understanding of English. It's more of a pet peeve then an actual problem.

Peace out.

What's the point of using language if we aren't going to use it properly?
Are you serious? Not everyone does get a lot of english at school (like me)
And not everyone lives in a country where english is the official language either.
If you know what someone means then there's no reason to correct them expect to be annoying
