Important ProjectKorra Update: Modernization, Open Source, and What's Next

Hello everyone!​


Over the past few weeks, we've been giving ProjectKorra some much-needed attention. Some of these changes are already live, while others will roll out over the coming weeks. Since many of these updates happen behind the scenes, we wanted to share everythign that's changed and where we're headed.

A Modernized Website​

The ProjectKorra website has been completely refreshed with a cleaner landing page that better reflects the current state of the community.

Rather than treating the forums as the homepage, the site now acts as a central hub with quick access to:
  • Downloads
  • Addons
  • Forums
  • Documentation / Wiki
  • GitHub
  • Discord
The goal is simple: make it easier for both new and returning users to find what they're looking for. It also features a live feed of recent addon updates.

XenForo Upgrade​

Our forums have been upgraded from XenForo 2.1 (Released in 2019) to the latest stable release.

This brings years of improvements, including:
  • Better performance
  • Improved security
  • Modern spam prevention
  • Better support for current PHP versions
  • Numerous quality-of-life improvements for members and moderators
The forums should be noticeably faster and far more reliable going forward.

Open Source Commitment​

ProjectKorra has always existed because of the incredible work of its contributors.

Over the years we've seen many forks, servers, and developers build amazing experiences using ProjectKorra. We want to continue encouraging that.

As part of this update, ProjectKorra is now licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).

Why LGPL?
  • Anyone can continue using ProjectKorra, including in larger server projects.
  • Improvements made directly to ProjectKorra itself remain open for everyone to benefit from.
  • Servers and plugins can build on top of ProjectKorra without being forced to open source their own independent code, while modifications to the ProjectKorra library itself remain shared under the LGPL.
We believe this strikes the right balance between protecting the project and encouraging innovation throughout the Minecraft community.

Resources​

The Resources section has received some cleanup and will continue to evolve.

Long term we'd like ProjectKorra.com to be the best place to discover:
  • Addons
  • Extensions
  • Official releases
  • Developer tools
  • Community projects
We're also exploring better ways to showcase projects beyond the traditional forum experience.

Looking Ahead​

ProjectKorra has been around for well over a decade.

While development has naturally slowed over the years, the project is not going anywhere. Our goal is to preserve what thousands of servers and millions of players have enjoyed while making sure it's easier for future developers to contribute.

Thank you to everyone who has written code, submitted pull requests, reported bugs, created addons, maintained servers, translated documentation, or simply played with the plugin over the years.

ProjectKorra exists because of this community.
