I'd imagine that airbenders can constantly push air around them to keep the water from caving in on them. Of course this wouldn't be nearly as efficient as waterbending, but it's still possible.

Would you rather have stuff like.. Surge, SurgeShieldWater, SurgeShieldIce... that's why it's best to combine moves- it gives more room for binds, and it especially helps add-ons imo, because it gives room to bind your personal choice of moves while being able to bind your favorite add-ons.

This doesn't kill the user- a light spirit does 3 hearts while a dark spirit does 3.5 hearts + debuffs...

Surge and RaiseEarth can protect you- I'd think you could understand that through the spreading feature that FireStream has on walls. AirShield can protect you too. But Radical Movements are another weakness to FireStream.
