Air is not defense. I wouldn't believe everything the wiki tells you. Air is the element of freedom, and what's more free than mobility? Nothing. They even have the move called flight. Earth is the most defensive.

Actually airbenders are pretty all around, mainly mobility, while earth is the defense element.

The point is, if I'm reading right, is to be able to augment a benders bending abilities individually. So like a normal torrent would do 3 damage, you could change it up and make only that players torrent do 4 damage. Stuff like that.
