I get what you mean by saying that, but the example isn't a very good one. Firebenders can't create a melee lightning, chidori-like Attack. This is because they would have to hold it in their hands and contain it, which would require the ability to control lighting. As Iroh states, you are not commanding it, you are guiding it. Thus firebenders do not BEND lighting, they can only generate and redirect lightning.
Naruto may also be martial arts, but the similarities tend to end there. I'm not against drawing from martial arts, as that's where bending is inspired from. I am, however, against drawing from Naruto, because that is not what we're trying to accomplish here. Even when we draw from martial arts, it's not going to be exactly like that, given that it's bending we're talking about. In Naruto, a lot of things they can do with similar elemental type stuff are very different from what bending is and can do. According to my research on wiki, some of the stuff in Naruto has to do with magic. They establish pretty early on in Avatar that bending and magic are separate.
