Canon vs Cannon

I see this just about every thread and a bit of me dies every time. One letter, in a single word discredits your entire post if you say cannon, and not canon.

Definition of cannon:noun, a large, heavy piece of artillery, typically mounted on wheels, formerly used in warfare.

Definition of canon: a general law, rule, principle, or criterion by which something is judged.

I'll explain them again for those of you who are still lost.

A cannon is a weapon in which gunpowder is ignited creating an explosion which propels a large, round stone or metal projectile.

If something is canonical, it properly applied to the canon, which in this case is the universe, characters, and events, of Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend Of Korra, The Promise, The Search and The Rift

The Last Airbender movie and a few comics are non-canon. And thus the events do not occur and cannot be used as evidence in an argument.

Oh because two letters instead of one discredits "A Brief History of Time." Typos aren't that important, and especially not when it is something like cannon for canon.

They aren't typos if they occur in almost every thread. People who forget an apostrophe or forget to use a space or a comma an a typo. Using cannon and not canon is just as annoying as when people saying "Their having a party over they're and its better then there neighbors". Or when people misspell character names.

No it simply isn't....One Letter inside a word in which it is pronounced exactly the same way and not offensive to anyone and not unclear to what the person is saying isn't annoying to anything that is. I mean, this.

If you can't take the time to spell a word properly why should anybody care about the comment being made?

Must I repeat. Everybody understands everything you type when you make this typo. Only grammer nazi's care about this typo.

Yeah, this is definitely needed because of all the confusion that is bound to come out of cannon threads, Anytime now.

What's the point of using language if we aren't going to use it properly?

The point of language is to convey a point, which can be done with typos like cannon for canon.
They teach you to spell in school for a reason. If you believe that typos don't matter then just make all of your posts from now on with phonetic spelling and see how far you get.

I am pretty certain that the reason editing exists would be to fix up things if they can't be understood. It is also partially based on the listener, as we could argue all day and not have the listener step back from their stance. http://www.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_conviction_bias
Try to find a good compromise for this thread. The truth is, there is no compromise.

Actually going towards the light means basically reawakening after dieing, it is a common experience for people that basically died(in a medical sense), and brought back to life. So if you want to live, go towards the light.

Are you honestly trying to say there is no compromise for somebody being right and the rest being wrong? You're one of those people who would have spit on Copernicus because his ideas threatened what you knew of the world. Any idea that's not yours is suddenly inferior to you, yet any idea you have is a masterpiece with no line out of place. In this case there is not debate other than you just being ignorant to learning to use the english language the way it was intended.

2. Going to the light me seeing heaven and walking away from life, not coming back to it.

It was not intended for there to be a giant argument over the differences between cannon and canon, the point of language is to be able to communicate in a coherent way. Not for grammer nazi's like yourself to ruin good threads when they have a single typo that you and everyone else, can still understand.

2. In a medical sense you are going to want to go towards the light. http://www.near-death.com/experiences/research16.html
If you want to otherwise trust movies over logic, you are going to die. So for you feel free to go away from the light. Logic being, the only way for somebody to have gone towards the light and be able to tell about it would be the people who lived from it.

1. I'm a grammar nazi? So I'm a "grammar national socialist"?
2. If the point is to communicate in a coherent way then when you're righting formal documents or applying to colleges go ahead and trough your grammar rules out the window.
3. Why are you trying to argue this. The spelling isn't a matter of opinion, it's a matter of having the intelligence to understand that they are two different words.

1. You really are oblivious, aren't you.
2. Go ahead and check your own spelling when arguing that EVERYONE should check their spelling and grammer EVERY time for EVERY thread, document, etc. You are a hypocrite. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hypocrite
3. I am trying to argue this so that grammer nazis won't have free reign over threads, and find a great suggestion and troll it with, OMG IT IS CANON NOT CANNON GUYS!!!! GET IT RIGHT!!! Over and over again. The difference between canon and cannon can be easily decided by context, and, since this is the internet, nobody except grammer nazi's like yourself about a single letter used in context like that.

as much as i may agree that the point of language is to convey meaning, and as long as the recipient understands what you mean then it doesn't matter. However in the case of 'cannon' vs 'canon', for someone who might not know what canon is, they may read 'This move is not cannon' and be very confused.
