How would this be cannon also. Earthbending is not an element that is supposed to flow, like how this sphere might. And they never showed this in the show.

if you would watch the 45* turns again, then you would notice they are slow, settling into another 45* turn. This would be what the change to the shield would be like.

You could move your shield 90 degrees and 180 degrees still. It would just have the shield have a bit more of a flow like how the martial art flows. Since you can rotate it 90*, you can rotate it 180*. It would still be able to block in between, but it would not stay in one position in between...

Range would not be effected by rotation at all in the martial art, so we can scratch that off. Speed and damage may be effected by rotation, although speed seems to be more effected. How about speed?

Perhaps there could be a simple boost to airswipe when walking around/strafing a opponent. Baguazhang is a martial art that constantly moves, and airbending is based off of that martial art. If you need info, look at this, just look at this.
