It would be more logical to me to have just the poison effect given to the player instead of creating an invisible npc to hit the player, which would take a lot of development just to get a basic version of.

Just saying, the removal of the Avatar's Avatar State isn't specific to the Mercury, the Avatar Cycle ends whenever an Avatar dies while in the Avatar State. IF we were to implement something like that we would most likely (IMO) make it a full thing not just the one ability.

For now we will most likely stick to vanilla, since block ids will be gone in a version anyway and there's no point in converting to it. If bukkit ever allows us to use mod blocks/items, we may change it.

Yeah, minecraft is doing away with block and item ids. Once 1.8 bukkit comes around we literally cannot use it anymore.

Regardless of whether it would look better, there are many things in the game we simply cannot use. Ender Dragon beams and beacon beams are some of them.

That would be awful imo, people just bending your beacon towers away.
