When the waterspout gets caught or hit by an earthblast projectile pass throught it, the spout would shrink down one block down by itself. If an earthsmash is thrown and went pass throught the waterspout ,the spout would then shrink 3 blocks down. This is due to the solid block knocking the liquid(water) from it's original place ,making part of the water seperate as it splashes away and by that, the amount water gets reduced.

Think of it this way Hydro, if a hose gets snapped, everything above becomes useless and the rest of the water keeps on coming out. For it to be like this, it'd be like cutting the hose and reconnecting the pieces that were disconnected; which in terms of bending doesn't make that much sense.

Also if you look at about, 3:53, you see something break Korra's spout at the BOTTOM of the spout and she still loses complete control over it

The explanation given is for waterbending is that the chi of the bender flows through the entire mass, but it can only go in water. As a result, if a non-water object gets thrown into it, the stream is broken, and they fall to the ground, due to a lack of supporting base. This is actually less realistic, despite the title, so is Denied.
