This ability is kinda underwhelming with the default config, but it's actually really cool when you play around with the range values. I haven't noticed anything buggy since I did so either. Maybe this is something you could look into?

Many people see lavabending as being op, I tried to balance it out by making it close range and such, if you feel the need to change it, go ahead. :p Better to make it not op by default and let the owners make changes. Plus if I updated it to make it a bit better, the pre-existing configs wouldn't change.
