Yes, it's a nice feature that adds depth to waterbending and requires skill to use it efficiently on land, also please remember that airblast is very different from surgejetting so the argument that it should work underwater doesn't really work here.

I don't think earths needs combos, it is a very creative element and it easily makes it's own "combos".

Being in metalclips would make much more sense, due to the way the abilities work, being in earthblast would make the metalbenders dealing an overwhelming barrage of atacks by switching between metal and normal earthblast. And, this suggestion is very relatable to metalclips, after all...

I definitely agree, maybe, shifting while launching the iron ingot could make it not grab the enemy.
