Is there a way to have an empty slot?

im trying to separate the earth, fire, water, air items by leaving empty slots in the /bi items display

is there anyway to do this? and if so how?

You could make fake items with glass pane as their item?

There is no easy way, as it sorts the items alphabetically.

There is no way to do this and I probably won't add it because its a pretty minor problem. I would recommend doing what zmeduna suggested, and just create fake items as separators.
