Because they were intending to block the fall damage with AirBending, if an airbender in the show isn't intending or can't block the fall damage then they take it. As should it be ingame

No, there are things confirmed Plant, blood, ice, metal are infact confirmed sub-elements. This is why your logic is flawed. You can't just say "well now those aren't a sub-element anymore"

It was never stated you would have to bend a different substance, because that's quite literally impossible. With that logic, sub elements don't exist entirely. expect for lightning and astral. With metal, and lava you're still bending the earth. Same with plant and ice
